Years ago, in college, I had an amazing opportunity to travel parts of the world and do a little research.
As such, part of school work involved cultural studies as well as the biological type. There is an abundance of history in the tropical region and if you are ever lucky enough to travel to Central America, South America and the amazing Isthmus of Panamá, check out the structures that are still standing hundreds of years later. The Las Cruces Trail, the Panama Railroad and then the Panama Canal provided the path and, in the process, shaped five centuries of local, regional, national and international history. This history is smeared in politics, industry, railroads, conquistadors, gold, love stories and PIRATES! Of course pirates don't have a good name, they are after all, pirates. But let's not deny the fact that this treacherous group has its own part in defining our society. Unlike today's pirates, the stories of witty dealings, female captains, nautical feats of navigation, planning, and survival skills are daunting and near impressive. The perils that the trade company and travelers faced to overcome pirate turbulence was sure to leave heroic tales for years on end. I touched the Las Cruces Trail with my hands and that trip reminded me that history can not be forgotten or dismissed! Pain, suffering, and conquest can lead to an adventurous, exciting and accomplished life. I have never been able to forget that trip or the fact that what I do in life becomes part of a story line in history.
